Frequently Asked Questions What is a Utility Shareholder Association?
A utility shareholder association is a non-profit advocacy organization that represents the interests of shareholders of investor-owned utilities. There are currently 11 state-specific utility shareholder associations throughout the United States. Who can belong to Utility Shareholders of South Dakota? Utility Shareholders of South Dakota general membership is open to people who hold shares in MDU Resources Group, Inc, Otter Tail Corporation, Xcel Energy, NorthWestern Energy and Black Hills Corporation. What is your mission? Utility Investors are the backbone of the industry that powers our businesses and heats or cools our homes. Our mission is to inform utility shareholders about energy issues, encourage grassroots advocacy, represent utility investors on energy policy issues, and promote a vibrant climate for utility investments. How much does it cost to join? Is membership tax-deductable? Base membership in US-SD is free. 1-year members support our mission with a minimum contribution of $20, and 3-year members with $50. Complying with tax law, US-SD estimates that 5.05% of the dues payment is not deductible as a business expense because of our direct lobbying activities on behalf of our members. Who decides your advocacy positions? The Board of Directors of US-SD decides the association’s advocacy positions by majority vote. Board members all serve with out pay, with the exception of the executive director, who is responsible for running day-to-day operation.
